An etui is a small, usually ornamental case for holding articles such as needles, scissors, knives, pencils, a tablet or even a letter opener. Etuis varied in size and shape, and would have contained items pertinent to its owner’s daily life. This particular example is highly decorative, featuring gold and carved mother of pearl inlay. The bottom features a wax seal of an encircled “A.”
